What is the CGC Program? "AKC's Canine Good CitizenŽ (CGC) Program is a certification program that is designed to reward dogs who have exhibited good manners at home and in the community." All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test are eligible to receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club (AKC). Get more information on the AKC website at www.akc.org/events/cgc/index.cfm .
What are the advantages of having a CGC certified dog? The CGC program is an excellent first step in the training of your dog. It is the AKC recognized foundation for dogs desiring to compete in AKC activities such as obedience, agility, tracking, and performance events. Many therapy dog and search and rescue dog organizations require CGC certification prior to entry into their program or certification by their organizations. Many home owners insurance companies are now offering reduced rates if your dog is CGC certified.
Who is eligible for CGC certification? Any dog of any breed or mixed breed can become a CGC dog. After taking the Possum Hollow CGC class, dogs will be given a short test that evaluates the dog's manners, appearance, and overall basic obedience skills as they would apply to a home or community setting. Many CGC evaluations will include some distractions that are common in a therapy setting (such as crutches, wheelchairs, etc.) to fulfill the requirements of therapy dog organizations.
How long are the classes and when are they offered?
Possum Hollow offers certification classes 2-3 times per year. The classes are designed to prepare
your dog to pass the CGC test. A CGC test will be offered
shortly following each course (or information will be provided for
locating a test site). The next CGC Class is scheduled for August
5th - 28th, 2008 What are the requirements to enroll in a Possum Hollow CGC class? All dogs enrolling in a CGC class are strongly encouraged to enroll their dog in a regular obedience training program first. To views program options click on Obedience on the side bar menu. CGC Certification classes are offered as an advanced class concentrating on CGC test items and are not meant to be a general or first-time obedience class. For more information contact Vicki Hughes at 828-429-6388 or info@possumhollowfarms.com .
When are the tests and how much do they cost? The Canine Good Citizen test administered at Possum Hollow is $10.00 per dog. (Note: Certificates are issued by AKC and must be purchased through them.) Tests taken at other locations may have different fees. You do not have to take the classes to take the test, but they are highly recommended. The next CGC Evaluation Test is scheduled for August
